Recall due to toxic plasticizers (DEHP) in consumer goods

On the internet portal lebensmittelwarnung.de, the BVL informs about a recent recall of drinking bottles. The reason for the recall is increased levels of the plasticizer DEHP (Diethylhexylphthalate).

DEHP is used in plastics to make them more moldable. If the plastic comes into contact with food, certain limits must be observed up to which the substance may migrate into the food. In Switzerland, the cantonal chemists recently informed on problems with foods with high-fat content being stored in such containers: In about one-quarter of the samples with PVC lids, the amounts of plasticizers that migrated into the food were so high that the packaging had to be objected to and the related foods were recalled.
