Recall of a cassava flour due to elevated cyanide content

Hydrocyanic acid (Cyanide) is a highly toxic substance that naturally occurs in bound form as so-called cyanogenic glycosides in some plant-based foods. During consumption and digestion, hydrocyanic acid is released by the plant's own enzyme β–Glucosidase. Excessive consumption of cyanide-containing foods can lead to severe poisoning in humans, potentially resulting in death.

An increased hydrocyanic acid content has now been detected in cassava flour, as hydrocyanic acid can pose an acute life danger, the food is being recalled.

In Regulation (EU) No. 2023/915 (EU Contaminants Regulation), maximum levels for hydrocyanic acid have been established for certain foods, including cassava flour. The maximum level is 10.0 mg/kg.

In the labs of the Tentamus Group, we regularly conduct hydrocyanic acid testing. We provide you with fast and reliable results and are happy to advise you on all matters concerning product safety. Our customer advisors are available to assist you with any questions.
