Recall of drinking coconuts due to possible mycotoxin contamination

Recall of drinking coconuts due to possible mycotoxin contamination

A major discount retailer has currently recalled whole drinking coconuts publicly. The recall is precautionary due to a possible content of mycotoxins, i.e., mold toxins that can be produced by certain molds under suitable conditions.

Mycotoxins are a group of natural metabolic products of various molds and can have harmful effects on health when ingested. Depending on the type and exposure, liver and kidney damage, impairment of the immune system, or other health effects are discussed. A possible indication of contamination can be an increased mold load in food.

Further information on mold toxins in food is provided by the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL). Various mycotoxins can be analytically detected in specialized laboratories.
