Recalls: Exceeding Maximum Levels for Ethylene Oxide

Ethylene oxide is a gas used in many countries for both disinfecting heat-sensitive foods (such as spices or seeds) and as a pesticide for pest control.

Due to its harmful effects on human health in high concentrations, it has been banned in the food industry in Europe since 1981. However, the use of ethylene oxide is not restricted in many countries. Thus, manufacturers often purchase already contaminated raw materials and process them further. As a result, there have seemingly been food recalls in Germany for some time now due to products exceeding the maximum levels for ethylene oxide set out in the pesticide regulation (EC) No. 396/2005.
