At the end of May this year, various sour milk cheeses from a dairy were recalled due to possible contamination with listeria. A few days ago, a fresh cheese from a discount store was recalled after Listeria monocytogenes were detected.

Although listeria are primarily soil-dwelling bacteria, they are widely distributed in the environment. Listeria can be found on plants, in wastewater, and in the stool of both healthy and sick animals. Due to their widespread presence, listeria regularly appear in raw animal and plant foods (e.g., meat, poultry, milk, vegetables, fish, and seafood). They also play a significant role in processed foods.

These bacteria can cause very serious illnesses, especially in pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and sick individuals.
