Recommendations for protecting infants and young children from potential risks due to pesticide residues in food
The EFSA recommendations are part of a comprehensive assessment of the safety of pesticide residues in food intended for infants and young children.
In their assessment, the experts of the EFSA used the Guidance on the assessment of substances in food for infants under 16 weeks of age developed by the Authority's Scientific Committee in 2017, as well as the results of a literature review on new findings about the development of various systems in infants and young children.
The EFSA recommends that the maximum levels of certain types of pesticide residues that may be present in food for infants and young children should be reviewed. This would provide adequate protection for infants under 16 weeks, even at maximum possible exposure.
In accordance with the EFSA's Scientific Committee guidelines, specific safe intake levels of pesticide residues could be determined for infants under 16 weeks. For infants older than 16 weeks, the current approach to determining health-based guidance values continues to be considered appropriate.
