Regulation (EC) 1881/2006 – new maximum levels for prussic acid (cyanide) planned
From the side of the European Commission, there is a draft regulation to amend Regulation (EC) No. 1881/2006 regarding maximum levels for hydrocyanic acid (also known as cyanide) in various foods. So far, there is only a maximum level for apricot kernels. Now, further maximum levels for linseed, almonds, and cassava are to be introduced. The planned maximum levels include, among others, 150 mg/kg of hydrocyanic acid in linseed or 35 mg/kg in almonds for the end consumer, 50 mg/kg in the cassava root, or 10 mg/kg in cassava flour (tapioca flour).
The draft regulation is now undergoing a three-month consultation process. Publication in the Official Journal of the European Commission is expected this summer, and the regulation is to apply from January 2023.
