Report on Allergen Labeling - In BAV Newsletter 03/2016
The examination authorities in Baden Württemberg (CVUAs) have published a report on the allergen labeling of unpackaged goods. It was found that there is still often a need for improvement in the gastronomy sector. In 40% of the tested dishes, deficiencies in labeling were observed. This means that in these samples, allergens were detected which are recipe-based or obviously contained in the dish.
The following errors were identified:
- Allergen was not declared (52%)
- Grain containing gluten or shell fruit was not mentioned by name (38%)
- No allergen labeling available in the establishment (4%)
- Only general indications, not related to the individual dish (4%)
- Incorrect allocation of allergens (2%)
The detected allergens were mainly milk, gluten-containing
grains, eggs, celery, and mustard. In an examination of ice cream (unpackaged goods), the mainly undeclared allergens found were soy, hazelnut followed by walnut. The lack of labeling is suspected to be due to, for example, soy being contained in an ingredient not declared by the manufacturer. (Source: http://www.ua-bw.de)
