According to the results of the official food inspection for the year 2010, deficiencies in operational hygiene and hygiene management were the main cause of complaints in the establishments.
In the federal states, 921,000 inspections were conducted risk-oriented in around 538,000 establishments. In 26% of the establishment inspections, inspectors detected hygiene violations and initiated measures.
A total of 408,000 samples were taken and examined, of which 13.5% of the samples were objected to. Reasons for the objections were labeling deficiencies (50%), microbiological quality (19%), and deficiencies in the composition of the products (12%).
