Revision of Maximum Levels for Deoxynivalenol (DON) in Cereals: Standing Committee Adopts Project
The longstanding endeavor to revise maximum levels for Deoxynivalenol (DON) in cereals and cereal products was adopted by the Standing Committee. In a recently published circular (L-594-2023 dated 21.9.2023), we informed about the draft regulation that was to be presented at the meeting on September 22, 2023. Although the draft was entered into the comitology register shortly before the meeting, there was no prior official notification from authorities at the national or European level.
Following the meeting, the final draft regulation (Project PLAN/2017/1539 Rev. 1) has now been published in the comitology register. It appears that no changes have been made compared to the previous draft regarding the maximum levels or the validity period of the project.
This revision aims to lower the maximum levels for DON in cereals and cereal products and to establish new or explicit maximum levels for certain products. However, some product categories have also been reformulated or changed. For a detailed list of changes, we refer to circular L-594-2023 and the draft regulation itself.
The new maximum levels are to come into effect on July 1, 2024, with products lawfully placed on the market before this date still allowed to be sold.
We will keep you informed about the publication of the corresponding regulation.
