Risk assessment of cosmetics: Water activity (aW-value) as a measure for risk classification

The investigation and analysis of the water activity (aW-value) in cosmetics serves to classify the risk of products from a microbiological perspective. Due to the fact that all microorganisms require a certain amount of water for their growth, a risk assessment can be made through this determination.

According to DIN EN ISO 29621, for products with an aW-value less than 0.75, routine microbiological testing can be waived. Conversely, this means that products with a value greater than 0.75 must undergo routine microbiological testing in accordance with the specifications of DIN EN ISO 17516.

Do you need proof (e.g. for the safety report) that your product is a low-risk product? Contact us, we look forward to your message.

In addition to determining water activity, the BAV Institute within the Tentamus Laboratory Group offers all tests relevant for the safety report (preservative efficacy test, chemical tests, etc.).
