Safety Gate - Unsafe Cosmetics in 2023
Almost 2000 cosmetic products were classified as unsafe in the EU rapid alert system in 2023 and recalled from the market because they did not meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009.
The majority of the products were recalled due to chemical residues and contaminants. Some products also exceeded the microbiological limits (ISO 17516). The main reasons for them being classified as unsafe cosmetics were:
- Prohibited fragrances, e.g., Lyral or Lilial
- Prohibited preservatives
- Prohibited substance hydroquinone
- Increased heavy metal content, e.g., lead, antimony, cadmium
