Salmonella, genetically modified foods, and antibiotic resistance are important health and consumer issues
In the BfR Consumer Monitor 02/2018, a survey on the awareness of health and consumer topics yielded the following results:
- Salmonella in food (96% awareness)
- genetically modified food (91% awareness)
- antibiotic resistance (87% awareness)
- pesticide residues in food (85% awareness)
- aluminum in food packaging or containers (82% awareness)
- microplastics in food (78% awareness)
- glyphosate in food (76% awareness)
- mycotoxins in food (73% awareness)
- fipronil in eggs, egg products, or chicken meat (63% awareness)
- Campylobacter in food (23% awareness)
- pyrrolizidine alkaloids in food (16% awareness)
- genome editing (12% awareness)
Regarding health and consumer issues, the respondents are particularly concerned about antibiotic resistance (62%), pesticide residues in food (53%), genetically modified food (50%), salmonella in food (46%), microplastics in food (45%), glyphosate in food (45%).
These surveys show, with a simple comparison between Salmonella and Campylobacter, that consumers are not sufficiently informed about many products. Although for many years the number of Campylobacteriosis cases has been significantly higher than Salmonella cases (in 2017 by a factor of about 5: Campylobacteriosis 65,605 and Salmonellosis 13,490), according to this BfR Consumer Monitor, only 9% of respondents are concerned about Campylobacter, yet 46% are concerned about Salmonella.
