Salmonella in Herb Blends

Recently, salmonella has been detected in various frozen herb mixes. This led to numerous product recalls.

Salmonella plays a significant role worldwide as a cause of gastrointestinal illnesses. Common carriers of salmonella include poultry and pigs, but also reptiles. The BfR (www.bfr.bund.de) and RKI (www.rki.de) also provide detailed information on this subject.

Salmonella is mostly transmitted through raw animal foods, especially poultry, eggs, and pork. But spices like paprika and pepper as well as herbs can also be contaminated with salmonella. In most other foods, salmonella is rarely found.

There has been a significant decline in salmonellosis for over 20 years. Nevertheless, salmonella is one of the most common causes of foodborne illnesses.

In food, salmonella is undesirable. Ready-to-eat foods contaminated with salmonella are considered health hazards because these pathogens can cause severe gastrointestinal infections, which can have serious consequences, especially for young children, pregnant women, the elderly, or those who are ill.
