Salmonella in spices: Less frequent, but it still occurs!

Salmonella in spices: Less frequent, but it still occurs!

A current recall of dried basil makes it clear: you must always be prepared for it! Although the detection rate - compared to the situation around the turn of the millennium and before - is significantly more relaxed - detection rates of 2-20% in spices were not uncommon back then - decontaminated products must still always be closely monitored. Exotic serovars of Salmonella have also been and are frequently detected, which ultimately aid epidemiological investigations.

Our recommendation: Always test herbs and spices for Salmonella. Do not skimp on a statistically validated sampling procedure. In case of need, we are happy to offer our validated, molecular biological rapid methods.
