Salmonella are on the rise in the EU - Campylobacter, Salmonella, STEC, Listeria & Co. overall at a high level
From the 2018 annual report of the EFSA and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, it appears that the number of salmonellosis cases has increased (91,857 reported cases).
Following campylobacteriosis (246,571 reported cases), salmonella is the second most frequently reported cause of gastrointestinal infections. Also at a high level were the cases of illnesses caused by STEC (Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli) with 8,161 reported cases. For the first time, there were more reported STEC cases than yersiniosis. Listeriosis (2,549 reported cases) was also slightly on the rise, confirming the trend of the last 10 years.
