Salmonella Control Program - Results for the Year 2023
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) published the annual report on the salmonella control program in August 2024 based on Directive 2003/99/EC Article 9 paragraph 1.
Animals are the main reservoir for salmonella. The RKI (Robert Koch Institute) therefore points out that farm animals and food products derived from them are among the top potential causes of infection for salmonellosis.
The data analysis shows that in the year 2023, the prevalence of salmonella in the considered animal species is at a low level. The control targets for the relevant salmonella serovars were achieved in all poultry groups considered.
For breeding chickens, broiler chickens, and turkeys, the prevalence was below 1% for the serovars relevant for control. For laying hens, a prevalence of 0.9% was determined, which is also below the target value of 2%.
At BAV Institut, we conduct tests for salmonella and other zoonotic pathogens.
