In the current August 2020 issue, Öko-Test examined 10 shaving creams and shaving gels each. Both branded products and private labels from discounters, supermarkets, and drugstores, in the field of conventional cosmetics and certified natural cosmetics, were represented.

The examinations of the samples paid special attention to:

- Allergenic fragrances and polycyclic musks
- Formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers
- Halogenated organic compounds
- PEG derivatives
- Synthetic polymers

Six of the 20 products, including the natural cosmetics, received a very good rating. Seven products received a good rating. The presence of PEG/PEG derivatives in the products was responsible for the grade reduction. Additionally, synthetic polymers were detected in six other products, which enter the wastewater and reach the sewage treatment plant, but cannot be completely filtered. Their impact on the environment is not yet sufficiently known, which is why they received a satisfactory rating. Two products received an unsatisfactory rating, as they also contained the artificial musk compound Galaxolide and the problematic fragrance Lilial, listed under the ingredient name "Butylphenyl Methylpropional".
