Special Committee "Glyphosate"

Special Committee "Glyphosate"

On February 6, 2018, the EU Parliament decided by a large majority to establish a "Glyphosate Special Committee," as reported by Thomas A. Friedrich from the trade magazine Lebensmittelpraxis.

The authorization procedure of the pesticide, which is suspected of causing cancer, and the intertwining of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) with the industrial applicant Monsanto are to be scrutinized in more detail.

The special committee, requested by the Greens in the EU Parliament, is scheduled to begin in March.

Philippe Lamberts (chairman of the Green group in the EU Parliament) emphasized to the press that economic interests played a key role in the EU Commission's requested extension of the glyphosate authorization for another five years.

According to Martin Häusling (agricultural spokesman for the Green/EFA faction), the special committee will put the glyphosate authorization procedure to the test and further investigate whether corporations improperly influenced the scientific assessment.
