Preservative efficacy tests are a fundamental component in assessing the microbiological safety of cosmetic products. 
Since 2012, the ISO 11930 standard for preservative efficacy tests for cosmetics has existed. While the guidelines of the European or American Pharmacopoeia were primarily followed in the past, the ISO 11930 provides guidelines for the implementation and evaluation of challenge tests specifically tailored to the cosmetics industry and is gaining increasing importance.
