Indication of the production and freezing date - In BAV Newsletter 01/2012

The Regulation (EU) No 16/2012, published in January 2012, stipulates that for frozen foods of animal origin, a production date and a freezing date (if not identical) must be made available to the food business operator upon delivery and to the authorities upon request.

The production date is the date of processing, cutting, mincing, or preparation. In the case of carcasses, the production date is, for example, the date of slaughter. The production date and, if applicable, the freezing date must be indicated up to the stage of packing in pre-packages or until further processing of the frozen animal foods. The indication of the freezing date on pre-packages will only become mandatory with the validity of the new Food Information Regulation.

The implementation of the requirements of Regulation (EU) No 16/2012 is carried out through the amendment of Annex II of Regulation (EC) No 853/2004 on rules for frozen foods of animal origin. The regulation came into force on February 1, 2012, and is applicable from July 1, 2012.
