Stability of Cosmetic Products
The consumer expects cosmetic products to be stable and safe throughout their entire application period. The shelf life of cosmetic products is indicated either by the use-by date or the so-called "Period after opening" (PAO, open jar). In accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 and when preparing the safety report, data on the stability and shelf life of a product is also required.
Typically, in addition to storing cosmetic products for their entire shelf life, storage tests are conducted at different temperatures and times to simulate shelf life. Common storage periods can last up to three months and are conducted at constant temperatures (e.g., room temperature or 40°C) or with daily temperature changes (e.g., alternating 5°C / 40°C). In parallel, chemical, microbiological, and sensory tests are conducted before, during, and after storage.
The exact investigation spectrum must be determined specifically for each product, and the results are compared with predefined specification values to derive statements about the product's stability.
BAV Institute regularly conducts such tests and is happy to create a corresponding test program for your product. Contact us, we look forward to it!
