Stability Tests of Cosmetic Products – ISO/TR 18811
The assessment of the stability of cosmetic products to evaluate and ensure their shelf life is a central component of a product's quality assurance. The ISO/TR 18811 standard "Guidelines for the stability testing of cosmetic products" from 2018 provides important guidance regarding the planning and execution of stability studies. Fundamental principles of execution, chemical, physicochemical, and microbiological aspects as well as the influences of packaging material are highlighted.
Stability tests are mandatory within the safety report according to Annex 1 of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 for cosmetics. Besides the chemical and physicochemical stability, the examination and proof of microbiological safety is especially crucial. This is achieved by complying with the criteria of ISO 17516 and through the preservative efficacy test according to ISO 11930.
