STEC/VTEC/EHEC - Infections in Switzerland
According to the report on the monitoring of zoonoses and foodborne disease outbreaks in Switzerland 2017, there were 696 reported cases of STEC/VTEC in Switzerland in 2017. This represents an increase of 50% compared to the previous year.
The main reason for this significant increase is believed to be the result of more testing for STEC/VTEC, leading to more cases being reported. These illnesses are feared mainly due to the rare but severe complications that can occur (HUS - hemolytic uremic syndrome). In 2017, 19 HUS cases were reported.
