Stiftung Warentest: Acrylamide
In the March 2019 issue of Stiftung Warentest, 53 products, including crunchy mueslis, coffee substitutes, crispbreads, rusks, cookies and wafers, children's rusks and cookies, crackers and potato chips, were tested exclusively for acrylamide. 23 of the products were organic foods. The results were evaluated based on the guidelines from Regulation (EU) 2017/2158 setting minimization measures and benchmark levels for reducing acrylamide content in foods.
The test results are as follows:
- In one out of 10 crunchy mueslis, the determined acrylamide content was near the guideline level of 300 µg/kg.
- High levels of acrylamide close to the guideline level of 500 µg/kg were determined in two malt coffee products.
- Higher levels of acrylamide were found in four out of eight crispbreads, with one close to the guideline level of 350 µg/kg. The rusks were inconspicuous.
- Four out of seven cookies and wafers had higher levels of acrylamide, two of them near the guideline level of 350 µg/kg.
- Among the crackers and potato chips, only one product, salted pretzels, was notable in terms of acrylamide content.
- The acrylamide levels in children's rusks and cookies were inconspicuous.
