Stiftung Warentest: Sausages with and without meat in test – one product showed high levels of MOSH

The Stiftung Warentest tested sausages with and without meat. The test included 7 vegan and vegetarian products as well as 14 pork sausages. A good quality was detected in 16 of the total 21 products.

In summary, the following test results were found:

·       Taste test: the meat-containing sausages achieved a better sensory result

·       Climate balance: the veggie alternatives significantly score here

·       Nutritional values: due to a lower fat content and better fatty acid composition, the veggie products have more advantageous nutritional values

·       Microbiology: a meat-containing sausage was noted for its high germ count, which already led to sensory abnormalities (lactic acid taste)

·       Contaminants: an increased level of MOSH (Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons), a mineral oil component, was detected in a vegan sausage alternative

Additionally, a meat screening was conducted on the meat products. Fortunately, a predominantly high meat quality, no addition of foreign animal species, and no rotten or mechanically separated meat were found.

In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly perform the analyses listed:

·       Microbiological and sensory examinations

·       Determination of nutritional values

·       Examination for Mineral Oil Components (MOSH/MOAH)

·       Determination of animal species

·       Examination for mechanically separated meat

We provide you with fast and reliable results.
