Test results of vegan and vegetarian foods
The industry and retail now offer a wide range of vegetarian and vegan products. In line with this trend, the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) examined these foods in 2017 as part of a special investigation program.
A total of 292 products from the following product groups were controlled by the LGL: meat, fish, and milk substitute products, baked goods, dough products, confectionery, infant/child foods, dietary supplements, and cosmetics. Of these, 81% of the samples were unobjectionable in terms of both their composition and labeling.
The investigations overall showed that vegetarian and vegan products do not pose any particular health hazards or hygiene problems. Furthermore, no animal ingredients were detected in products labeled as vegetarian and vegan. Deviations in labeling need to be checked on a case-by-case basis.
