The FDA investigates Salmonella infections linked to raw sprouts
The FDA advises consumers not to eat sprouts at Jimmy John's in Illinois and Wisconsin. This product may carry Salmonella.
Epidemiological evidence indicates that raw sprouts served in Jimmy John's restaurants are a probable source for a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo infections, according to CDC reports. The latest illness broke out on January 3, 2018.
The FDA is working with partners in Illinois and Wisconsin to trace the clover sprouts to determine the source of the pathogen and to see where these clover sprouts have spread and to learn more about the potential contamination route.
The CDC reports that eight people have already been infected with Salmonella Montevideo; two in Illinois, one in Michigan, and five in Wisconsin. Seven of these eight people ate at Jimmy John's in Illinois and Wisconsin a week before they became sick.
All seven affected individuals report having raw sprouts on their sandwich at Jimmy John's. All clinical isolates have the same DNA fingerprint of Salmonella Montevideo.
State and local partners, including the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, are supporting traceback activities for this infection by collecting invoices from various Jimmy John's locations and/or distributors to determine the source of the clover sprouts.
