TrailMixtested: HygieneDeficienciesandContaminantFindingsTaintHealthyImage
Overall, 29 trail mix products were examined, including eleven organic blends. Six products received the top rating of “very good.” Others, however, failed due to increased microbial contamination or detectable residues of chemical substances.
This highlights the fact that even with dry snacks that generally have a positive nutritional profile, quality and hygiene controls are crucial.
Microbiological Finding: Enterobacteria Above Guideline Value
An elevated concentration of enterobacteria was found in one product. The measured values exceeded the guideline values set by the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (DGHM) for nuts and dried fruits.
Enterobacteria are intestinal bacteria regarded as hygiene indicators. They can enter the product due to inadequate hygiene during harvesting, processing, or packaging. High germ counts indicate weaknesses in the production process, such as in cleaning, drying, storage, or packaging.
Although the risk is generally lower for dry foods like nuts and raisins compared to fresh, water-rich products, certain microorganisms can still survive in a dry environment for extended periods. Therefore, exceeding guideline values clearly signals a need for optimization in operational hygiene measures.
Pesticides and Mineral Oil Components Detected
In addition to microbiological abnormalities, the testers found pesticide residues as well as mineral oil components in numerous products. Such residues can be introduced along the entire supply chain—from cultivation through transport to packaging.
Despite the positive nutritional properties of nuts, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends a daily consumption of about 25 grams of nuts. This is due, in part, to the high energy content as well as the sometimes considerable sugar content from added or mixed dried fruits.
Not a High-Risk Product – But Clear Quality Requirements
Trail mix remains, fundamentally, a comparatively low-risk product. However, the test underscores how important consistent hygiene and quality controls are, even for dry snacks. Especially mixed products with internationally sourced raw materials place high demands on supply chain management and internal control systems.
Laboratory Analytics and Product Safety
At the BAV Institute, regular microbiological investigations of nuts and dried fruits, as well as chemical analyses for residues and contaminants, are conducted in the affiliated Tentamus laboratories. Companies receive rapid and reliable results along with advice on all matters related to product safety and quality assurance.
