Use of Octocrylene as UV filter in cosmetics

Use of Octocrylene as UV filter in cosmetics

The substance Octocrylene (CAS No. 6197-30-4) is used in cosmetics as a UV filter according to the specifications of Annex VI of the Regulation (EC) 1223/2009. The maximum amount for cosmetic finished products is currently 10%, and for sprays the maximum amount is set at 9%.

For some time now, there has been a discussion about the potential negative impacts of this UV filter on marine ecosystems and especially on corals. The adverse effect on drinking water through contamination is also being discussed.

The French agency Anses plans to introduce restrictions on this substance through Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation. These restrictions would then be directly applicable to all cosmetic products.

The BAV Institute within the network of the international laboratory group Tentamus supports you with advice and analysis on this topic.

We will keep you informed about further developments.
