VeganCheeseAlternativesUnderTheMagnifyingGlass: BVLWarnsOfMineralOilComponents
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) points out that vegan cheese substitute products can sometimes contain contaminants from mineral oil components (MOSH/MOAH).
During the 2024 monitoring, numerous plant-based cheese alternatives were tested — residues were found in many samples. Particularly critical: concentrations of MOAH that could be problematic with frequent consumption (e.g., by children or heavy consumers).
Consumers — especially pregnant women, children, the elderly, or people with pre-existing health conditions — should be aware of these risks and choose plant-based cheese alternatives wisely.
Even though vegan cheese products are popular for health or ethical reasons, testing for chemical residues remains important. Manufacturers are encouraged to adjust their production and packaging processes to keep contamination with mineral oil components as low as possible.
For maximum product safety, we analyze your cheese alternatives microbiologically and chemically in collaboration with our partner laboratories. Feel free to contact us!
