Vegan sausage in eco-test: Criticism of increased mineral oil levels and too much salt
In the June 2024 issue of Öko-Test, 19 vegan sausages, including ten organic products, were examined for the following parameters:
- Mineral oil components (MOSH/MOAH)
- Salt
- Iodine
- Additives
Criticism was mainly aimed at mineral oil components. Additionally, high salt and iodine levels as well as concerning thickening agents and unnecessary flavor additives were criticized.
In six tested products, elevated levels of mineral oil components were found, including three organic products with levels significantly above the reference value of 11 mg/kg for "vegan and vegetarian pan products similar to animal-derived products". The reference values of the Lebensmittelverband Deutschland e. V. and the LAV (Federal Working Group on Consumer Health Protection) are based on investigation results from food monitoring and the food industry and include nine product categories.
MOSH can accumulate in organs, particularly in the liver, spleen, and lymph nodes. The MOAH fraction includes, among other things, carcinogenic substances. Further information on the sources of entry of mineral oil components in food can be found here.
In our Tentamus laboratories, we regularly conduct testing for MOSH/MOAH. We provide fast and reliable results.
