Worldwide recall: 2 deaths due to Listeria monocytogenes in sausages
After two deaths and 37 illnesses caused by the germ Listeria monocytogenes, the company Wilke Wurstwaren must stop its production.
Affected products were pizza salami and cooked sausage.
The veterinary office closed the operation. A worldwide recall of all products has been initiated. As early as the beginning of the year, contamination with Listeria monocytogenes was repeatedly found in Wilke products.
Listeria monocytogenes are bacteria known as pathogens for humans and animals.
They are widely distributed in the environment and can be found in raw animal and plant foods as well as in processed foods (meat and sausages, smoked fish products, mixed salads). These bacteria can cause very severe illnesses, particularly in pregnant women, infants, the elderly, and sick people.
