Corona crisis and its effects on the cosmetics industry
The corona crisis has been some time ago now, but we still notice its effects in practice, for example with silicone oil raw materials:
Silicones are used in hair care products for better combability or in creams to improve application behavior. The INCI cyclomethicone includes a mixture of cyclic dimethyl polysiloxanes of different chain lengths. It should be noted that the use of cyclotetrasiloxane (octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane, D4) in cosmetic products has been prohibited since 2019 (Annex II No. 1388, Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009).
Due to the corona crisis, raw material procurement has dramatically worsened for many cosmetics manufacturers, so that old batches of silicone oil raw materials were sometimes used. As a result, there are positive silicone findings again and again regarding the prohibited cyclotetrasiloxane.
