Diseaseoutbreaksduetocontaminatedfoodaredeclining
Annual Report 2021: Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) and Robert Koch Institute (RKI) report fewer foodborne disease outbreaks in Germany. Most are caused by Campylobacter spp. and Salmonella.
A total of 168 foodborne disease outbreaks with at least 1179 illnesses were reported to RKI and BVL. There were at least 196 hospitalizations and 2 deaths associated with these outbreaks.
38% of the outbreaks were attributed to the pathogen Campylobacter spp., Salmonella were responsible for 36% of the outbreaks. Noroviruses were identified as the cause for another 7%, and Bacillus cereus for 4%. There were numerous other pathogens with a frequency of 2% of cases or less.
