Per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) in cosmetics

Per- and polyfluorinated substances (PFAS) are a group of more than 10,000 substances that can also be introduced into cosmetics as environmental contaminants and can lead to a product being deemed not marketable according to the Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.

Due to their properties of being dirt and water repellent, PFAS are extensively used and thereby also enter cosmetics. Recently, some PFAS (PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, PFHXS) have been regulated in animal foods according to Regulation (EU) 2022/2388 with maximum levels. A general ban through the European Chemicals Agency ECHA is also planned in the coming years.

The BAV Institute, in conjunction with the international Tentamus laboratory group, analyzes this complex group of substances as one of the few laboratories in Europe using the latest analytical methods. We also conduct this examination for you in cosmetics and cosmetic raw materials.
