Consumer Protection: Recall of Farmhouse Sausage due to Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC/VTEC)
At the beginning of September this year, a "farmer's sausage, spreadable raw sausage" was recalled. The product tested positive for STEC/VTEC (STEC and VTEC are technically identical: STEC = Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, VTEC = Verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli). The cause could have been contaminated meat.
E. coli in food indicates fecal contamination and can enter the environment and animal and plant-based foods through excrement or feces.
Infections with STEC/VTEC can cause gastrointestinal complaints, including bloody diarrhea with fever. Further complications and diseases such as the HUS syndrome (hemolytic uremic syndrome), which destroys blood cells and damages kidney function, may ensue.
