Current Food Warnings: Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in Flours

Due to the detection of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), three official recalls of flours were initiated in the first week of August 2022.

The ALTS concludes that positive findings in flours are to be classified as harmful to health unless the flour is accompanied by a statement such as "cereal flours, baking mixes, and doughs are not intended for raw consumption and must always be thoroughly heated." STEC can cause severe food poisoning associated with diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting.

You can access our profile on STEC on our homepage. Further information on pathogenic E. coli strains can also be found at the Robert Koch Institute.

To detect potential contamination early, rapid and reliable results are essential. In our laboratory, we regularly conduct investigations on STEC, including cultural confirmation of viable organisms. Our customer advisors are happy to assist you with any questions.
