In Hesse, between October 2021 and January 2022, four people contracted listeriosis, one of whom died. The infectious disease was triggered by contaminated cucumber slices from a fruit and vegetable company, which produces products for hospitals among others, contaminated with Listeria

Severe hygiene deficiencies such as puddles, rat droppings, and mold were found in the production, along with missing cleaning plans and insufficient self-monitoring. The Hessian authorities have prohibited the company from further processing food.

The responsible veterinary office had not inspected the company for two years, even though one to two inspections per year were required. The reason for the missed inspections was bottlenecks during the Corona pandemic.
