Formaldehyde in Self-Tanners – Issues after Storage

Self-tanners are cosmetic products that tan the outermost layer of the skin by the added active ingredient reacting with the keratin proteins of the skin. This is not a pigment formation that occurs through sunbathing and therefore provides no protection of the skin against UV rays.

The active ingredient dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is commonly used in self-tanners, which is approved according to Annex II No. 322 of Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009 up to a concentration of 10%.
Due to its chemical structure, DHA can release formaldehyde, especially at elevated storage temperatures of the cosmetic product. Formaldehyde is prohibited in cosmetic products according to Annex II No. 1577 of Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.

Our institute analyzes formaldehyde in cosmetic products as well as in raw materials for you.
Do you want to know if your products are contaminated with formaldehyde? We look forward to your message.
