Hepatitis A viruses: Europe-wide recall of a frozen berry mix
The berry mix from a Belgian company was recalled across Europe after several people in Hungary fell ill with hepatitis A and were hospitalized following a restaurant visit. Subsequent investigations detected hepatitis A viruses in a 2.5-kilogram bag of a berry mix. The current stock was blocked and already distributed packages were recalled across Europe.
Hepatitis A viruses are triggers of acute liver inflammation. Symptoms include fever, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice). In addition to the direct transmission of the viruses from person to person, the disease is also often caused by contaminated food and water.
In our profile you can learn more about the significance, origin, and potential sources of contamination of hepatitis A viruses in food. Further information and literature can also be found at the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).
