Between 2016 and 2022, a total of 89 samples of sprouts were examined by the Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES). The majority of the samples came from retail and wholesale as well as from catering establishments. Nine samples were taken at a production site in Lower Saxony.

Summary of the results:

-          Salmonella was detected in one sample, which was deemed unsafe.

-          Listeria monocytogenes was qualitatively detected in one sample. The quantitative follow-up investigation showed a content below the limit of 100 CFU/g.

-          Bacillus cereus was detected in six samples. The levels were comparatively low, hence these findings do not present a direct hazard.

-          E. coli was detected in two samples, but it was not the EHEC causing STEC/VTEC.

The results show that microbiological hazards are present when consuming fresh sprouts and seedlings. Consumers with weakened immune systems, in particular, should be aware of this when consuming fresh sprouts and seedlings.

At the BAV Institute, we regularly conduct microbiological examinations of sprouts and seedlings. We provide rapid and reliable results. If you have any questions, our customer service representatives are happy to assist you.
