New article on furocoumarins in cosmetics published
The cosmetics experts of the CVUA in Karlsruhe have published a new article on the topic of furocoumarins in cosmetics.
Furocoumarins are natural components of various plant extracts and are often used in body oils and other personal care products. Some of these compounds can cause edema and skin irritation under sunlight exposure (especially psoralen, 5- and 8-methoxypsoralen).
The EU Cosmetics Regulation Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 prohibits the use of furocoumarins in cosmetics (except for natural essential oils with natural levels). For sunscreen products, a limit of 1mg/kg applies.
CVUA tested a total of 14 body oils and 12 other products for their furocoumarin content. Especially the body oils show partially high levels. The evaluation of possible levels is carried out by the safety assessor within the framework of creating the safety report.
