New Reporting Obligations for Food Companies under the Zoonosis Regulation
On June 29, 2020, the Fourth Ordinance to Amend Regulations for the Implementation of Food Hygiene Law was published in the Federal Law Gazette.
The amendments also include new provisions to the Zoonosis Ordinance or the reporting obligations for food manufacturers contained therein. These regulations came into force on the day of publication.

Previously, only evidence of zoonotic pathogens in food was subject to mandatory reporting. As of now, the following are also subject to mandatory reporting:
- Evidence of Listeria monocytogenes in food residues or smear water in cheese production
- Evidence of Listeria monocytogenes from environmental investigations of surfaces that may come into contact with ready-to-eat foods, such as work surfaces, piping systems, or transport containers
All mandatory reports according to the Zoonosis Ordinance must be reported to the competent authority immediately upon knowledge. Furthermore, it is also new that a report not submitted, incorrect, or not submitted in a timely manner to the authority constitutes an administrative offense.
The required retention samples of the sample material and the preparation of corresponding isolates in case of positive findings, according to the Zoonosis Ordinance, we will continue to perform automatically in our laboratory as before, at no additional cost to our customers.
