Re-regulation of the substance N-Methylanthranilate (MNM) in cosmetics
Due to a revision of an opinion by the SCCS (Scientific Committee of the EU), the use of the substance N-Methylanthranilate in cosmetics is newly regulated.
This substance is a fragrance ingredient used in perfumes, shampoos, soaps, etc. The SCCS concludes that this substance should not be used in sunscreen products due to its properties. In all other products, a restriction to 0.1% (leave-on products) or 0.2% (rinse-off products) is indicated.
Furthermore, due to its tendency to nitrosate, this substance should not be used in combination with nitrosating agents.
The annex to Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 will be amended accordingly in a timely manner, and this substance will be provided with the aforementioned use restrictions.
