Residues of Pesticides in Cosmetic Products and Raw Materials

Residues of Pesticides in Cosmetic Products and Raw Materials

When using plant-based ingredients such as herbs, oils, fats, etc., as raw materials, residues of plant protection products (pesticides) can enter cosmetics. Due to the fact that more plant-based ingredients for natural cosmetics are entering the market, this issue is very current.

It is the responsibility of the manufacturer or trader to minimize residues of plant protection products in cosmetics within the framework of quality assurance. This is done through the appropriate selection and control of suppliers as well as through regular testing of raw materials and end products.

The assessment of possible residues is subject to the EU Cosmetics Regulation VO (EG) 1223/2009. The safety and the technical inevitability must be verified (safety report). Not least, consumer expectations for natural cosmetic products regarding potential residues are likely higher than for conventional products. This, too, in light of the Claims Regulation VO (EU) 655/2013.

Individual pesticide active substances can also be found listed as prohibited substances in Annex II of the VO (EG) 1223/2009.

The BAV Institute within the international Tentamus Laboratory Group performs this examination for you for plant protection product residues using the most modern LC and GC methods down to trace levels. More than 600 active substances are included in this testing spectrum.
