Marketability and trade testing of cosmetics continue to gain importance
Trading companies and retailers usually require so-called marketability certificates for cosmetic products from their contract manufacturers. These are generally demanded before the initial market launch and are considered an essential prerequisite for placing products on the market.
The marketability assessment is carried out on a risk-based approach by specialized testing laboratories. This assessment determines whether a cosmetic product meets both legal requirements and specific trade requirements. One of the central testing parameters is microbiological safety, which is evaluated according to the standards of ISO 17516
In addition, cosmetic products are tested for possible residues and contaminants, such as heavy metals or plasticizers. Another focus is on verifying correct and complete labeling to ensure that all mandatory information is transparently and legally presented to consumers.
Additionally, a comprehensive document review is conducted, especially including the safety report in accordance with the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009, the proper notification in the CPNP, as well as proof for declared claims, such as skin compatibility or effectiveness
It should be noted that there is no uniform regulatory requirement for the specific scope of a marketability certificate. The scope is individually coordinated between the contract manufacturer and the testing laboratory, depending on the requirements of the respective trading partner. The marketability assessment supplements the legal requirements of the EU Cosmetics Regulation but does not replace them.
